Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain Sends Message After Dream Celtic Debut
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had plenty to say after making a stunning first appearance for Celtic.
Coming off the bench, the midfielder delivered exactly what manager Martin O’Neill had hoped for, firing home a superb stoppage-time winner to seal the victory. It was a fairy-tale start for Oxlade-Chamberlain, who celebrated wildly despite already enjoying a decorated career.
Since arriving at Celtic, the former England international has spoken openly about why he chose the move, highlighting conversations with those closest to him. Among them were friends of his father, club legend Joe Hart, and lifelong Celtic fan Andy Robertson.
Oxlade-Chamberlain on Andy Robertson’s Reaction
Robertson was thrilled to see his close friend join the club he supports and was especially excited about the transfer. Oxlade-Chamberlain revealed that Robertson had been constantly messaging him in the lead-up to the move.
After the match, the debutant joked that he expected to hear from his old teammate. “He’d better message me,” he said. “If he doesn’t, I’ll be disappointed. I’m sure he’ll text, and if not, I’ll remind him myself. I need to check my phone and see what’s going on.”
Reflecting on the match, Oxlade-Chamberlain stressed the importance of resilience. “You can’t win every game comfortably, even as a big club,” he explained. “Sometimes you have to grind out results, and that’s part of football at the highest level.
“We had chances early on and should have made things easier, but when that doesn’t happen, you need to stay calm, keep pushing, and trust that the moment will come. Livingston defended well and posed a threat from set-pieces, so credit to them. It was a valuable early lesson for me.”
He added: “Our focus has to be on winning every game. That’s the mindset we need every time we step onto the pitch.”
Impact of Celtic’s Other January Signings
So far, Celtic’s standout winter recruit has been Julian Araujo, who has quickly cemented his place as the club’s first-choice right-back.
Up front, Tomas Cvancara enjoyed a run in the starting XI and impressed on his debut with a fine assist for Yang Hyun-jun against Hearts, although he is now without a goal in two matches. Junior Adamu has also made an impact, scoring a crucial equaliser on his debut against Dundee.
However, it was a tougher start for Joel Mvuka, who was substituted at half-time during the Dundee clash.
