His father, Carlos Mac Allister, insists the Argentina international is fully focused on Liverpool and is simply awaiting clarity over the club’s plans for a new contract.
Addressing the rumours, Carlos said his son is “only thinking about Liverpool” and confirmed they are “waiting for an offer to renew his deal” before assessing the club’s intentions. While not an outright denial, his comments clearly steer attention back towards Anfield rather than Old Trafford.
The link has gained traction because it fits into United’s expected summer overhaul in midfield. Reports suggest the club are compiling a shortlist of targets, keeping tabs on Mac Allister’s situation, and weighing up options as they prepare for changes, including the likely departure of Casemiro.
However, the reality makes such a move highly unlikely. Liverpool selling a key player to their fiercest rivals would be extraordinary, especially given how rare direct transfers between the two clubs have been. The last notable deal of this kind dates back to 1964, when Phil Chisnall moved from United to Liverpool.
From a contractual standpoint, Liverpool hold the upper hand. Mac Allister is reportedly tied down until 2028, meaning there is no urgency to sell and the club remain firmly in control of any future discussions.
Speculation is fuelled by uncertainty over his role under Arne Slot, with suggestions that his inconsistent starts and the absence of renewal talks have prompted his camp to seek clarity on his long-term importance in the squad.
