‘Complete nonsense’ – Winger firmly shuts down fresh wave of Liverpool transfer speculation

Anthony Gordon has firmly dismissed fresh rumours linking him with a move to Liverpool, branding the speculation as “complete nonsense.”

The Newcastle winger had come close to joining the Reds two summers ago and was reportedly eager to return to his hometown. However, he remained at St James’ Park and went on to play a key role in the Magpies’ Carabao Cup triumph last season.

Recent reports suggested Liverpool were once again keen on the 24-year-old and leading the chase ahead of Arsenal and Manchester City. But Gordon shut down those claims after netting four goals in Newcastle’s emphatic 6-1 victory over Qarabag on Wednesday.

Speaking to the media, he played down the transfer talk, saying: “I haven’t seen any of that. What are they saying? It’s the same story every time — they just pick names at random. I haven’t heard anything. You’d think they’d tell me before telling the press. I’ve been through enough transfer rumours to know it’s all nonsense.

”Despite earlier suggestions that he had been tempted by a Liverpool return in 2024, Gordon now appears fully focused on his Newcastle future. His four-goal haul in Azerbaijan took him into double figures in the Champions League this season, although his Premier League output has been more modest. While his versatility across the attack and homegrown status would make him an attractive option for Liverpool, there’s currently little indication of a serious move materialising in 2026.Speculation could increase if Newcastle fail to secure European qualification, but the club would demand a hefty fee for a key player approaching his 25th birthday. For now, talk of a return to Merseyside seems wide of the mark — though in football, circumstances can always change.
