Serbian Olympians received a spectacular welcome home on Monday evening in Belgrade, and the event was reported by many regional and global media that were there to witness the celebration from the famous “Belgrade balcony”- reserved for the country’s very best athletes.
The two biggest sports stars that Serbia has right now – Novak Djokovic and Nikola Jokic – mostly occupied the headlines – including, for example, the Spanish Marca, which said:
“Madness in Belgrade: 70,000 people cheer on the Serbian medalists led by Djokovic and Jokic” – while the subtitle reads: “Serbs go crazy for the sports myths of their country!”
The Bulgarians reported about last night saying, “Madness in Belgrade, Djokovic welcomed as a deity,” and even the Mexican media wrote about “the frenzy caused by the Serbs.”
The Croats, on the other hand, were not happy, but not because of the celebration received by the Serbian Olympians, rather about what is clearly happening over there.
“Belgrade was ‘on fire’ to welcome the Olympians, thousands gathered. About a hundred, in Zagreb,” said the 24sata.hr website.
US press also reported about last night’s celebration, using Nikola Jokic (who plays in the NBA) as a way to talk about thousands of people who gathered in Belgrade to welcome their winners.
