Serena Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian teaches their daughter Olympia chess, jokes about getting beaten easily
Serena Williams’ husband, Alexis Ohanian, is teaching their eldest daughter Olympia chess. He shared an update where he mentioned he was ensuring she knew how to play the game and also jokingly said that it won’t be tough for her to defeat him.
Ohanian took to Instagram to share an image of Olympia making a move on a kid-friendly chess board. The Reddit co-founder was seemingly on the other side of things, trying to teach her the sport. He captioned the image,
“Making sure this little Armenian girl knows how to play (it won’t be hard to beat Papa).”
Although Ohanian is an American citizen, he has Armenian heritage. His grandmother Elizabeth Der-Krikorian’s family was deported from Bitlis to Marseille, France. Elizabeth met Alexis’ grandfather, John Ohanian, after she traveled to the USA.
Alexis, whose father was born in San Francisco, California, was born in New York. Despite being born and raised in the United States, Alexis maintains a strong connection to his Armenian heritage. He frequently discusses his cultural background and actively seeks opportunities to contribute to the Armenian community.
Therefore, he referred to Olympia as an ‘Armenian girl’ as she also possesses Armenian heritage from her father’s side.

Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian got engaged in December 2016 and welcomed their first daughter Olympia to the world on September 1, 2017. The couple tied the knot two months later.
In August 2023, they welcomed their second daughter, Adira River, into their family. In a recent interview, Ohanian shared how Adira has already taken her first steps and is just beginning to speak her first words. Further, he revealed what Olympia’s first words were.
“Olympia is doing great. She’s almost seven now. Olympia’s first word was ‘Mama,’ because behind the scenes, I’d be telling her like, ‘Mama, mama, mama.’ The least you can do for Mama is make sure that it’s the first word,” Ohanian said.
He also mentioned that Olympia is exploring golf and tennis. While he attempted to get her interested in soccer, it is still a work in progress.
“The two of them are so good together and Olympia, now I’m her daddy caddy on Sundays, so she’s learning golf, she is taking tennis lessons. I tried to get her into soccer, obviously, with the Angel City, but she’s still content to be a fan. Doesn’t want to be on the pitch yet, but we’ll see,” he added.
Serena Williams’ family recently celebrated Adira’s birthday as she turned one on August 15, 2024.
