Russian tennis star Daniil Medvedev has raised concerns about a noticeable trend in the sport that he believes is leading to heightened physical strain and an uptick in injuries among players. The 2021 US Open champion pointed out that tennis is gradually slowing down, attributing this shift to heavier tennis balls and slower court speeds.

Medvedev expressed his reservations about this trend despite acknowledging its benefits to his own playing style. He emphasized the negative impact of heavier balls, particularly highlighting his discomfort during tournaments in China where he found the balls excessively heavy. Additionally, he echoed sentiments shared by other players, including Novak Djokovic, regarding the potential link between frequent ball changes and shoulder and wrist injuries.

During a press conference at the Vienna Open, Medvedev emphasized the seriousness of these issues, expressing concern about the long-term physical consequences for players if the ball-related problems are not addressed promptly.

In an interview, Medvedev reiterated his observations about the evolving nature of tennis, noting the increasing heaviness of balls and the slower pace of courts, resulting in extended rallies. While acknowledging the potential evolution of court speeds in the future, he expressed uncertainty about his personal preference for the current direction of the sport due to the associated physical strain and rising injury rates.

Despite these concerns, Medvedev remains focused on refining his game and introducing new elements to surprise his opponents. He emphasized his intention to develop new tactical moves and incorporate them gradually into his gameplay, starting with cautious adjustments during tournaments like the upcoming Indian Wells Open.

As Medvedev prepares to compete in the 2024 Indian Wells Open, his remarks underscore the ongoing dialogue within the tennis community regarding the balance between game evolution and player welfare. With his determination to adapt and innovate, Medvedev exemplifies the resilience and strategic mindset required to navigate the challenges of modern professional tennis.
