Novak Djokovic on Brink of Historic Record at French Open – Can He Match Federer?”

By | June 1, 2024

Novak Djokovic is poised to match Roger Federer’s record for Grand Slam match wins as he takes on Lorenzo Musetti at the French Open on Saturday. With a victory, Djokovic will reach 369 Grand Slam wins, equaling Federer’s record. The defending champion, who is seeking his fourth Roland Garros title and 25th career major, has a strong track record against Musetti, winning four out of their five encounters. However, their 2021 French Open clash saw Musetti take the first two sets before retiring due to injury.

Despite a challenging season, Djokovic remains confident. “There is always that kind of conviction and belief inside of me I can win a Slam. That’s the reason why I’m still competing at this level,” the 37-year-old remarked. His preparation for the French Open was marred by a lack of titles and finals appearances, as well as an accidental injury in Rome and stomach issues in Geneva. Nevertheless, Djokovic has yet to drop a set in Paris, showcasing his form with 43 winners against Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena.

Meanwhile, German fourth seed Alexander Zverev, who ended Rafael Nadal’s French Open career, faces Dutch 26th seed Tallon Griekspoor. Zverev, a semi-finalist for the past three years, acknowledges the magnitude of his first-round victory over Nadal, saying, “He won the tournament 14 times, so he deserves all the credit and respect.”

Casper Ruud, the seventh-seeded Norwegian and last year’s runner-up, required five sets to defeat Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Ruud will now meet Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry, who advanced after his opponent retired due to injury.

In the women’s tournament, Aryna Sabalenka and Paula Badosa will face each other for a place in the last 16. Despite their close friendship, Sabalenka is determined to maintain her Grand Slam momentum.

Lastly, 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva, who ousted Victoria Azarenka, will face Peyton Stearns as she aims to reach her third Slam last 16.
