“I’ve had a fantastic career, I’ve always put a lot of passion into it and given my all. But I’ve been very happy since I announced my retirement, because it has relieved my stress. I can’t wait to play my last tournaments.”
With these words released in an interview for ATP, Dominic Thiem talked about his feelings regarding his imminent retirement.
“I have to tell you something important, very sad but also very beautiful: this will be my last season,” he told.

Last May, Thiem announced that he will say goodbye to tennis at the end of 2024, in his home tournament in Vienna. There are two main reasons behind the tough decision taken by the Austrian. The first concerns his wrist, which no longer gave him certainties after the injury, and the second is linked to the motivational aspect due to a series of results that were not exciting for a tennis player like him, who also won a Slam, at the US Open 2020.
“I’m trying to enjoy my last months as much as possible. It’s an exciting year: Diego Schwartzman and I have announced our retirement, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray are living the final part of their careers. Even though there are some players from the old generation who continue to play at a very high level, we have an incredible new generation. There are two guys who have already become number 1, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, who are incredible and play great tennis I think tennis is in very good hands with them,” explained the Austrian.

We remember Alcaraz suffered the third defeat of his career on grass, the first after thirteen consecutive victories; those that allowed him to triumph first at the Queen’s tournament and then at Wimbledon last year. The last one to beat him was Jannik Sinner on the lawns of the All England Club in 2022. At the Queen’s Club Championships, however, one of the best versions of Jack Draper took care of it. Sinner instead won his first title on grass-courts and his first as ATP No.1, triumphing at the Halle Open.
