Chelsea are reportedly maintaining their interest in Liverpool attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz, with manager Xabi Alonso said to be keen on the possibility of working with the German international again.
The 23-year-old joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2025 for a transfer fee reported to be worth up to £116 million. However, Wirtz has experienced a challenging start to life at Anfield, struggling at times to reproduce the outstanding performances that made him one of Europe’s most highly rated young players.
Despite his inconsistent form, Liverpool remain committed to helping him succeed, while Chelsea are reportedly monitoring his situation in case an opportunity to sign him emerges.
CHELSEA MONITOR WIRTZ FOLLOWING ALONSO’S RECOMMENDATION

According to reports from TEAMtalk, Chelsea are keeping track of Wirtz’s progress after Alonso reportedly advised the club’s hierarchy to remain alert to any possibility of signing the midfielder.
The Blues are not currently pursuing a formal transfer, and Liverpool have no immediate plans to sell their expensive summer signing. Wirtz is also understood to be focused on establishing himself at Anfield rather than seeking an exit.
Recent performances have provided encouragement for Liverpool. During the Reds’ match against Brentford, Wirtz created nine chances from open play, a remarkable achievement that highlighted his growing influence in the attacking third.
He also found the net during Liverpool’s thrilling 4-3 Champions League victory over Villarreal, offering further evidence that his confidence and attacking contribution are improving.
Alonso has long been an admirer of Wirtz’s abilities. Their successful spell together at Bayer Leverkusen helped establish the midfielder as one of the leading attacking talents in European football.
The Spanish coach previously described Wirtz as a world-class player, underlining the high regard in which he holds the German international.
ALONSO COULD BE KEY TO A POTENTIAL CHELSEA MOVE
Chelsea’s interest is understandable given Alonso’s previous relationship with Wirtz. The manager knows the midfielder’s strengths, understands how to get the best out of him and played an important role in his development at Leverkusen.
A reunion could become a possibility if Wirtz’s situation at Liverpool changes in the future. However, there is currently little indication that a transfer is imminent.
Liverpool invested heavily to bring Wirtz to Merseyside and will be eager to see that investment rewarded. The midfielder is also under contract until 2030, giving the Reds a strong negotiating position should another club attempt to sign him.
LIVERPOOL MUST REMAIN PATIENT WITH THEIR RECORD SIGNING
Liverpool would have little reason to rush into a decision about Wirtz’s future, particularly with signs that his performances are beginning to improve.
Moving from the Bundesliga to the Premier League can require time and adjustment, even for players with exceptional technical ability. Wirtz arrived at Anfield with enormous expectations, and adapting to a new league, team and tactical system was never guaranteed to happen immediately.
His recent displays suggest that he could be moving in the right direction, making patience an important factor in Liverpool’s plans.
Chelsea, meanwhile, will reportedly continue monitoring developments rather than making an immediate formal approach.
For now, Liverpool remain in control of Wirtz’s future, and the German midfielder appears determined to prove his worth at Anfield. If his recent improvement continues, the Reds could have every reason to believe that their significant investment will eventually pay off.
The bottom line: Chelsea are reportedly keeping Florian Wirtz on their radar at Xabi Alonso’s recommendation, but Liverpool have no current intention of selling him. Any potential reunion between the midfielder and his former coach remains speculative at this stage.
