Liverpool’s failed attempt to sign Marc Guéhi once felt like a major setback, but his recent struggles at Manchester City have changed the picture.
Guéhi made a costly mistake in City’s 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa and was substituted at half-time, adding to growing concerns over his form.
Liverpool eventually took a different path, signing highly-rated French defender Jérémy Jacquet for a reported £60 million.
While Jacquet has less experience, the Reds see him as a long-term defensive investment with the pace, composure and potential to become a key player.
It is still too early to judge either transfer, and Guéhi could yet prove his quality at City. However, if Jacquet develops into the top-class defender Liverpool expect, the failed Guéhi deal could eventually be viewed as a blessing in disguise.
