Liverpool’s academy winger, Trent Kone-Doherty, has completed a permanent transfer to Norwegian club Molde FK. The sporting director of the Eliteserien team publicly thanked Liverpool for the professional and collaborative manner in which the negotiations were held.
After nearly four years at the academy in Kirkby, the 19-year-old leaves Anfield. Molde’s official announcement conveyed a warm and respectful tone, signaling that this transfer goes beyond a typical youth exit.
In confirming the signing on their website, Ole Jakob Strandhagen, Molde’s sports director, noted the friendly discussions between the two clubs.
“We appreciate Liverpool for fostering a positive negotiating atmosphere, even though they were eager to keep Trent,” he remarked.
Kone-Doherty joined from Derry City in 2022 and quickly gained recognition for his speed and bold, direct playing style. Molde presented him as an exciting winger capable of captivating fans.
“I love getting the crowd excited. I always aim to play freely and without fear,” the young player shared in the club’s announcement.
This transfer aims to secure more playing opportunities. Although Liverpool offered him a new contract, first-team chances seemed unlikely in the near future. In contrast, Molde can offer him immediate starting positions in Norway’s top league.
The teenager has already played twice for Liverpool’s first team, debuting in the FA Cup against Plymouth Argyle in February 2025 and making a substitute appearance this season.
Strandhagen expressed confidence in his future: “Trent is a technically gifted and fast winger who showed notable quality and potential in the attacking phase while at Liverpool.”
Despite limited senior appearances, his outstanding academy record explains why the Reds valued him highly—he was a regular for the U21s and had a prolific run at the U18 level, with only minor setbacks due to injury.
Molde also commended the development he received at Anfield: “He had excellent training and growth at Liverpool, and we’re thrilled he chose Molde for the next step in his career.”
This transfer seems more a strategic decision for his development rather than Liverpool losing a key player. With competition for first-team spots under Arne Slot being intense, the move allows him to gain essential senior experience instead of stagnating in youth football.
Liverpool has a history of supporting such developmental pathways, and the positive relationship with Molde leaves the door open for future monitoring or a possible return if his career continues to progress.
For now, Trent Kone-Doherty departs on amicable terms, with both sides viewing the transfer as a collaborative and beneficial process rather than a contentious one.
